Storage tanks are protected with explosion hatches or Emergency Relief Valves (ERVs) and/or Vacuum Pressure Valves or Pressure Vacuum Valves (PVVs). The periodic check of these safety devices is required by law and can now also be performed on-site. ECH has developed this method and applied it in practice. How does it work?

The safety is first given a thorough visual inspection, both externally and internally, and then the adjustment is checked. The technical specialist positions an elevator system on the ERV that can accurately register the lifting of the valve. The obtained data is entered in a validated calculation model. This calculation model determines both the moment of opening and the moment of maximum opening. The test results are immediately available. This means the test can be concluded by sealing the adjustment of the ERV and issuing the certificate.

Why on-site?

Testing and certifying ERVs and PVVs in a workplace is labour-intensive and risky. Performing this work without the need to dismantle and relocate the ERV/PVV is safer, faster and cheaper. During the on-site inspection, no crane is required, the ERV/PVV is not disconnected and no replacement ERV/PVV is required. The Ex test and measurement equipment is mobile and can be used anywhere by the technical specialist. The entire test is carried out in three hours, including the installation of the necessary equipment.

PGS 29

PGS 29 prescribes that an ERV/PVV must be inspected with a check of the adjustment pressure at first installation, during re-installation and after revision. The opening pressure must be periodically checked every five years by an competent body on the basis of a method accepted by the authorised authority.
